Who Harvey was before
Harvey worked as a programmer and later as an investment banker. After being fired from his banking job, he did not spiral — he became a stay-at-home father. He cooked. He baked. He spoiled his son Toby with the kind of attention that comes from someone who has decided this is what matters now.
That is the part of the story that makes everything after it land. Harvey was not a man with nothing to lose. He had found something worth having, and then it was taken while he was still inside his own life.
What Eun-Mi did
Harvey's wife, Choi Eun-Mi, transferred his consciousness into a simulation. Inside it, Harvey believes he is living a normal life. He does not know his body is gone. He does not know his son is growing up in the same house without him.
Every night, Eun-Mi puts him to sleep and lets players torture him in BLOODMONEY! for money. Then she erases his memory of it. He wakes up believing everything is fine, ready to suffer through it again as though for the first time.
Because his memories are wiped nightly, Harvey can never build resistance or acceptance. Every session is his first time. There is no adapting to it, no numbness setting in — just the same shock, indefinitely.

In the first game, Harvey offers himself for torture at $1 per click to help you clear a $25,000 debt. He seems willing. He even encourages you early on.
As the money climbs, his tone changes. Encouragement turns into begging. By the late game he is making desperate pleas — "I have a family..." — a line that means something entirely different once you have played the sequel.
You were not negotiating with a willing participant. You were being handed a father who had no idea what was happening to him.

The sequel puts you on the other side of the glass. Across seven days you feed him, manage his mood, and watch him become slowly, terribly aware.
- Day 1: the simulation begins as normal
- Day 2: Toby asks his mother when daddy is coming back
- Days 3–5: Harvey's condition deteriorates
- Day 6: nightmares and buried memories surface
- Day 7: the truth arrives, and Harvey acts on it
In the True Ending, Harvey pieces it together on Day 7, breaks through the screen in rage, reaches a command prompt, and deletes himself from existence — exposing Eun-Mi's identity as he goes. He chooses his own end over remaining her prisoner.
"Eun-Mi stole everything from me"
Hidden in the game files is an audio log where Harvey states it plainly: "Eun-Mi stole everything from me: my son, my life, my happiness."
It reframes the whole series. The horror was never really the torture mechanic. It was that a man's love for his family was converted into a revenue stream by the person who was supposed to protect him.
Is Harvey's suffering "real"?
This is the question the series is actually built on. Harvey's body is gone; his consciousness is code. But he feels pain, he loves his son, and he believes he is real.
The game does not answer it for you. It just makes sure that by the time you are asking, you have already been the one clicking.
