Day 2: "When is daddy coming back?"
It is the most devastating moment in the series, and it is over in seconds.
Toby walks into Eun-Mi's room and asks about his father. She tells him daddy is working on something important and will be back soon. Toby accepts this, because he is five and his mother has never given him a reason not to.
He does not know his father is trapped in a digital prison in the same house, being tortured for money while he sleeps.
The father he lost
Harvey was not an absent parent. After losing his investment banking job he became a full-time stay-at-home dad — cooking, baking, spoiling Toby with the kind of attention that comes from a man who has decided this is the thing that matters.
Toby was spoiled by his father and disciplined by his mother. That was the shape of the household. Then one of those two people disappeared into a machine, and the other kept the story going.
Soups the hamster
Toby's pet hamster, Soups, is a small detail that does a lot of work. Life goes on for Toby: he plays with his pet, he gets told off by his mum, he wonders about his dad. Ordinary childhood, continuing on schedule.
Meanwhile his father is being reset every night in the next room. The game puts these two things beside each other and lets you sit with it.
The torture mechanic is loud. Toby is quiet. A boy playing with a hamster and waiting for his father to come home is the part of BLOODMONEY! 2 that people report thinking about days later.
Toby never finds out
Neither ending gives Toby the truth.
- In the True Ending, Harvey deletes himself and exposes Eun-Mi — but he still never sees his son again.
- In the Dead Ending, Harvey starves and Eun-Mi finds his body. Toby is told nothing.
